The Rosie & Vi Venard Scholarship was awarded to JoAnna Strom and Molly Hansen. JoAnna is the daughter of Philip and Dorothy Strom and is a graduating senior from Beresford High. JoAnna plans to attend South Dakota State University in Brookings and will be majoring in animal Science. Molly is also a graduate of Beresford High and is the daughter of Jeff and Kay Hansen. Molly will be pursuing a degree in pre-veterinary at South Dakota State University in Brookings.
4-H Scholarships were awarded to Shelli Knutson, Kyle Hubert and Sandra Geuther. Shelli, the daughter of Cindy and Lowell Knutson, graduated from Vermillion High this past May. She plans to attend The University of South Dakota. Kyle Hubert also graduated from Vermillion High in May 2006 and will be attending South Dakota State University this fall. Sandra Geuther, a Wakonda High spring graduate, is the daughter of Vickie Mensch-Geuther and DelRay Geuther. Sandra will be attending Southeast Tech in Sioux Falls and majoring in business administration.
Centennial Scholarships were awarded to nine young people this year. Mike Hanson, a 2006 graduate of Vermillion High School, will be attending the Lake Area Technical Institute in Watertown where he will be pursuing a degree in agriculture production. Mike is the son of Calvin and Mary Hanson. Jessie Stockland, the daughter of Charles and Suzanne Stockland, will be attending South Dakota State University this fall to study psychology and business. She graduated from Irene High School in May of this year.
Tyler Knudson, the son of Cheryl Knudson, will be attending Lake Area Technical Institute in Watertown to get a degree in electronics. He was a 2006 graduate from Wakonda High. A May 2006 Vermillion High graduate, Trisha Irvine, will be attending Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne, WY, to study radiology. Trisha is the daughter of Cindy Weber-Blair.
Kent Stockland, the son of Frank and Robin Stockland, will be heading to Mitchell Technical Institute to earn a degree in electrical construction and maintenance. Kent graduated from Wakonda High in May of 2006. Tiffany Ganschow will be attending Southeast Technical Institute to earn a degree in diagnostic medical sonography – Abdominal OB/GYN. Tiffany, a graduate of Wakonda High this past May, is the daughter of Dave and Brenda Ganschow. Robert Gregoire, the son of Tim and Johanna Gregoire, is planning to attend The University of South Dakota to pursue a degree in business. Robert graduated from Wakonda High in May of 2006.
Heather Walker, a May graduate of Vermillion High and the daughter of Lanny and Vickie Walker, will be attending The University of South Dakota to study pre-medicine. Anne Carlson, a 2005 graduate of Vermillion High, is currently attending Central Missouri State University where she is earning a degree in public relations. Anne is the daughter of Mike and Kathy Carlson.
The Clay County Youth Trust Fund awards are presented annually to Clay County residents. The Venard, 4-H and Centennial Scholarship applicants must be Clay County youth and attending or will be attending a higher school of education. All applicants must demonstrate abilities in scholastics, leadership and citizenship.
Scholarships are funded from the Clay County Youth Trust Fund, Inc., a non-profit organization designed to provide financial aid to Clay County youth and youth activities. It is administered by a Board of Directors comprised of Cathi Powell, Barry Cahoon, Jerry Sommervold, Mike Lynch, Phyllis Sternquist, Mike Carlson and Deb Christensen.
Rose and Vi Venard were the principal founders and contributors to the fund. Memorials and gifts to the fund are tax-exempt. The board thanks all who donate each year. This generosity makes it possible to award so many Clay County youth help with their educational needs.
