Clay County child is accidentally shot
Five-year-old Tyler Morey of rural Vermillion died Wednesday morning of an accidental gunshot wound to the head, according to a press release from Clay County Sheriff Andy Howe.

The child's parents are Michael and Monica Morey of Vermillion.

The weapon used was a .22 caliber rifle owned by the family. A minor child, a sibling of Tyler Morey, was playing with the rifle when it was fired. The gunshot struck the victim.

The shooting took place in the yard of the family's residence at approximately 8:15 p.m. Tuesday. Michael Morey was home at the time but not involved in the shooting. Monica Morey was at work and not present at the time of the incident.

Sheriff's deputies and an ambulance were dispatched immediately and Tyler Morey was transported to Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls where he was later pronounced dead.

No foul play is suspected and charges will not be filed. The shooting was determined to be accidental.


At this time, the victim's name and details of his condition are not being released because of the confidentiality of protected health information, the release said.

The incident remains under investigation by the Clay County sheriff's office. Additional information will be released when it becomes available.
