Vermillion got rolling in the bottom of the inning sending 14 batters to the plate and scoring 11 runs. The final was Vermillion 15 and Beresford 7. Vermillion ended its regular season with a 26-18 record.
Vermillion hosted the Region 6A 15-16 Teener Tournament on Aug. 3, 5 and 6. In the opening round, Vermillion faced Parkston for the fifth time this season and again it was a close, hard-fought game till the end.
Each team scored one run in the first. Parkston added three runs in the second, and two in the third and fourth while holding Vermillion scoreless to take a seemingly secure 8-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth.
In the bottom of the fifth, Vermillion knocked Parkston's starter Jeremy Sudbeck out by sending 11 batters to the plate while scoring six runs to pull within 8-7. Vermillion had a runner called out at the plate and that left runners at second and third to end the inning.
In the sixth, Vermillion would tie the game up with a walk and a pair of singles and again leave runners at first and third to end the inning. In the eighth, Parkston got two runs across while holding Vermillion scoreless to claim a 10-8 win. It was the second time this season that Parkston had gotten by the Vermillion squad in extra innings.
Wagner eliminated Vermillion from the tournament with a 12-6 win on Saturday. Parkston would go through the tournament undefeated and will return to defend their state championship which will be held in Winner on Aug. 11-13. The Vermillion squad received their sportsmanship trophy at the conclusion of the tourney.
