USD Coyote football team ranks higher in Division II poll
The South Dakota football team continues to receive national respect in the 2006 Division II polls.

The Coyotes, who won a share of the 2005 North Central Conference title, has moved from 15th to 13th in the most recent American Football Coaches Association Division II poll, released by the AFCA Aug. 29.

The Coyotes have been ranked in five top-20 Division II preseason polls this pre-season. Earlier, USD was ranked seventh by Lindy's Magazine, 11th by Don Hansen Football Gazette, 12th by D2football.com and 13th by the Street and Smith magazine in their respective Division II preseason rankings. The AFCA released its second poll of the season after a week of limited play.


Grand Valley State remained the top team in the country with all 28 first place ballots in the AFCA poll.

Northwest Missouri State was second; North Alabama, third; Saginaw Valley State and North Dakota, tied for fourth. The AFCA Coaches poll consists of a board of 28 AFCA member head coaches from Division II schools around the country. The poll is released on Tuesdays during the regular season.

A year ago, USD was ranked as high as third by D2football.com and fifth in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA).

At the end of the regular season, USD was ranked eighth by D2football.com and 11th by the AFCA. USD was 17th in the final AFCA poll.
