The South Dakota football team, which won a share of the 2005 North Central Conference title, has received its fourth top-20 Division II preseason ranking for the 2006 season from a national publication or Web site.

The Coyotes are ranked 12th by, which released its NCAA Division II top-25 football rankings on Monday, Aug. 21.

In addition, USD seniors Stefan Logan (Miami, FL) and Jordan Davis (San Antonio, TX) were named to the's second team preseason All-America squad. Logan now has been named to four preseason All-America squads (Lindy's, Street and Smith, Don Hansen Football Gazette and

Davis earned his first career preseason All-America honor.

Earlier, USD was ranked seventh by Lindy's Magazine, 11th by Don Hansen Football Gazette, and 13th by the Street and Smith magazine in their respective Division II preseason rankings.

The Coyotes, which opened its fall pre-season camp on Aug. 12, will face Quincy University in a special Thursday night home opener on Aug. 31 at the DakotaDome at 7 p.m.

South Dakota returns 16 starters from a squad that was nationally-ranked all season in 2005. The 2005 Coyotes finished their second straight 9-2 season and again mounted a 4-2 record in conference play, which earned USD its first league crown since 1978. USD returns five starters on offense, including Logan, who was selected to four All-American squads after the 2005 season.

A Harlon Hill Trophy candidate, Logan is the Coyotes' career leader in rushing with 4,251 yards and owns the all-purpose yardage mark of 5,189 yards at South Dakota.

The Coyotes also return nine starters on defense, including its entire secondary which Davis, who was named to the All-NCC second team a year ago. Davis has 116 career tackles, five interceptions (one TD return), three fumble recoveries, and four tackles for a loss.

A year ago, USD was ranked as high as third by and fifth in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA). At the end of the regular season, USD was ranked eighth by and 11th by the AFCA. USD was 17th.
