Volleyball team opens with sad losses vs. EP/J
The VHS varsity volleyball team entertained the Elk Point Huskies, losing a three-game match with scores of 16-25, 19-25, 1-25, and 15-10, on Saturday, Aug. 26 in the Vermillion gym.

In the preliminary matches, the C team (freshmen) lost 1-2, scores 20-25; 25-20, and 14-16. Stats for the team: Ashley Ouellette – 8 serve points, 6 digs; Jenny Bye – 6 serve points; Sierra Allen – 8 kills, 8 digs; Michelle Blythe – 6 assists; Molly LeCates – 5 assists.

"The girls worked hard and with such a close game we thought the results were great for our first match," said coach Chris Doty.

The junior varsity also went 1-2, by 24-26, 25-19, and 12-15. Individual players for the match: Leading attacks – Rachel Odens 5 kills, 2 blocks; Justine Sorenson – 4 kills; Sara Kjose – 2 aces, 9 assists; Raychel Lorenz – 6 assists; Sara Bye – 6 digs.

"For our first match, we showed some promise, but we need to improve our communication on the court," said coach Lori Jerred

Head coach Lenni Billberg was somewhat disappointed with the varsity's performance.

"We just couldn't get an offense going, but our defense was adequate for the first match. Elk Point/Jefferson is a team to be reckoned with," she said.

In the match – Ariel Hofman – 7 POS, 1 ace, 8 D; Krista Froke – 3 POS, 2 aces, 6 K; Kinsey Weydert – 9 assists, 4 POS; Alicia Brown – 8 D, 1 ace, 2 B.
