To the editor:
On Sept. 20, 10,000 American Cancer Society Ambassadors will be participating in a national Celebration On the Hill. In addition to joining a very large Relay for Life, our purpose is to visit with Congressional representatives regarding cancer issues. Recently federal funding for cancer research and programs has been reduced.
I am fortunate to be one of eight South Dakota volunteers who will discuss the effects of this disease with our senators and representative. We will ask them: 1) to continue funding the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program; and 2) to increase funding for cancer research and programs.
The goal of the American Cancer Society is to eliminate suffering and death due to cancer by the year 2015. Hopefully, participating in this event will bring more attention and ultimately more monetary allocations appropriated for the achievement of our single purpose.
