South Dakota soccer picks up another win
The South Dakota soccer team picked up its second consecutive victory by defeating Augustana 2-0 in the North Central Conference opener for both clubs on a drizzly and overcast day at Howard Wood Field. The Coyotes improved to 3-2-1 overall and 1-0-0 in league play with the win while the Vikings fell to 1-5-0 on the year and 0-2-0 in the NCC.

Though the first half was scoreless, USD forced most of the action on the offensive end by out-shooting the Vikings by a 14-1 margin, including a 4-0 advantage in shots on goal.

The second half started out much the same as the first with the Coyotes applying most of the offensive pressure. Senior forward Tina Brummer (Gretna, NE) broke the scoreless deadlock with 29:52 left on the clock when she sliced through the Augustana defense and blasted a shot past the goalkeeper to the corner. Sophomore midfielder Betsy Blacker (Rapid City) and sophomore forward Angela O'Loughlin (Broomfield, CO) assisted on the play, which was Brummer's second goal of the season.

Junior forward Ashley Ervin (Western Springs, IL) gave South Dakota a 2-0 lead at the 74:52 mark when she fired a shot from the left side of the field to the far side of the net for her third goal of the season. Sophomore forward Sarah Halbach (St. Paul, MN) and Brummer were credited with assists on Ervin's goal.

Those two goals were plenty for USD freshman goalkeeper Elizabeth Odorisio (Omaha, NE) as she turned away three shots in the game to improve to 2-0-0 on the season. Odorisio also extended her personal scoreless streak to start the season to 271:53 as she has yet to surrender a goal in her collegiate career.

The final statistics saw South Dakota attempt 27 shots compared to five for Augustana. USD also held an 11-3 advantage in shots on goal.
