The Trojans dominated the defense and capitalized on Tanager mistakes (a fumble on the 6-yard line, and a 95-yard kickoff return) both for TDs). The game was played in adverse weather conditions, temporarily halted at halftime for a windy thunderstorm to move through the Hartford area (about 30 minutes).
Vermillion's defense was not enough to stop the Trojans, even though the linebackers made the most stops, they were 5 to 10 yards from the scrimmage line. However the team came up with 86 tackles for the game.

"It was an extremely frustrating night for our team in Hartford," said coach Gary Culver. "We were simply out-played in all phases of the game. We had breakdowns on offense, defense and the specialty teams. We took a step backwards in this game.
"I felt we had made good progress through the first three contests and had continued to improve each week," he continued. "That was not the case this time. But we don't have time to dwell on this loss as we face a very tough opponent, the Beresford Watchdogs, in our homecoming game this week. They are always ready to play Vermillion and we want to use homecoming as a great motivation for this game. I know our team will get back on track and be ready to play hard on Friday night."
The Tanagers, who dropped their record to 1-3, will host the Beresford Watchdogs for their Tanager Day homecoming game. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. in the DakotaDome on Friday, Sept. 22.
