Tourney hopes dashed for USD volleyball team
The first day of the Northern Extreme Crossover Tournament did not go as hoped for the South Dakota volleyball team as they dropped two matches to fall to 1-5 on the season.

The Coyotes opened with a 3-1 loss to Mary (30-22, 30-25, 21-30, 30-24) before falling to Northern State 3-2 (20-30, 30-28, 26-30, 30-28, 15-9) in the nightcap.

Against Mary, sophomore middleback Heather Hult led the Coyotes with 13 kills, while junior setter Ashley Gross added 10 kills and 18 assists. Sophomore libero Amber Kobus had a match-high 32 digs.

Senior setter Casey Beardsley established a season-high with 25 digs, while sophomore middle hitter Jenna Hatfield was credited with five block solos and four block assists.

Mary took the first two games of the opening match of the day before the Coyotes came back to win the third. However, USD was unable to complete its rally as the Marauders took the fourth and decisive game by a 30-24 margin. South Dakota totaled 18 blocks in the match compared to just eight for Mary.

The second match of the night was a back-and-forth affair that saw Northern State rally from a two-games-to-one defict to claim victory. Gross had a career-high 20 kills and a .333 hitting percentage in the losing effort, and also led the Coyotes with 32 assists. Both of those totals are the best individual effort by a USD player this season. She also had three block solos and three block assists.

Hult hit at a .364 clip by committing only one error along with collecting 13 kills.

Sophomore outsider hitter Gabi Jarchow added 11 kills and 22 digs, while Kobus set a career-high with 41 digs on the match. Beardsley added 25 assists to equal her season-high from earlier in the day.
