VHS volleyball team has big win at EP/J
The VHS varsity volleyball team outpointed the Elk Point Huskies, winning a five-game match with scores of 26-24, 17-25, 7-25, 25-16, and 15-9 for the victory. The unscheduled contest was played on Thursday, Sept. 14 in the EP/J High School gym.

In the preliminary matches, a combined freshman and JV team won 2-0, with scores of 35-23; 18-8.

Stats for the team: Breanna Brinkman – 4 kills; Molly LeCates – 3 aces, 4 assists, 1 block; Katie Hanson – 3 aces; Kelsey Osborne – 3 K; Becca Hawley – 2 K; Michelle Blythe – 3 assists; Dana Hannahs – 9 digs; Rozzie LaMie – 7 D.


"The girls played very well," said coach Chris Doty. "It was a great opportunity for them to get some court time."

After that, the freshmen played a 0-2 loss to EP/J.

"We struggled with keeping our serve in play, but did a lot of good things too," Doty said. "We're improving every day."

She cited the following: Jenny Bye – 3 A, 3 K; Sierra Allen – 1 A, 2 K; Ashley Ouellette – 1 K, 1 B, 6 D; Michelle Blythe – 3 SA, 4 D; Molly LeCates – 3 SA; Janine Gauert – 4 D.

The junior varsity lost 1-2, by 22-25, 25-23, 20-25.

Individual players for the match: Leading attacks – Brinkman – 7 aces, 4 K; Angie Christensen – 4 K, 3 B; Sierra Allen – 3 K, 6 B; Sara Kjose – 13 assists; and Hannah Korcuska – 10 D.

"We played an excellent match," said coach Lori Jerred. "Things are really starting to come together for us."

Head coach Lenni Billberg was happy with the varsity's performance.

"We played fantastic and beat an excellent EP/J team," she said.

In the match: Ariel Hofman – 12 D; Krista Froke – 5 A, 8 K, and 6 B; Kinsey Weydert – 29; Kayla Gale – 12 K; Alicia Brown – 3 A, 10 K, 9 B, and 10 D.
