39 DWI arrests made during D-Days
The South Dakota Highway Patrol held 10 sobriety checkpoints from 3 p.m. Oct. 5 to 3:30 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 8 in the Vermillion area this past weekend during the annual "USD Dakota Days" celebration.

According to Highway Patrol Captain Kevin Joffer, troopers made 39 DWI arrests between Thursday night and Sunday morning. One of those DWI arrests was for a fifth offense DWI.

At one of the checkpoint locations Saturday night, troopers made 18 DWI arrests in two-and-a-half hours.

According to Joffer, there were seven more DWI arrests made during this year's event than in 2005. Twenty people were cited for underage consumption of alcohol.

One felony and four misdemeanor drug arrests were also made during the three day reporting period.

Joffer says that although these kind of stats are troubling, the Highway Patrol reported an "accident free" weekend in the Vermillion area as a result of their efforts.

Joffer said he also believes the Highway Patrol prevented 39 drunk drivers from sharing the road with others who drove to Vermillion to enjoy the Dakota Day festivities.
