Freshman football team finishes the season undefeatedSports Writer
The Tanager freshman defeated a tough Canton team 14-6 at home to finish off their season with a 5-0 record. The cold weather and wind made things tough for both teams to score points, however, the Tanagers found the end zone twice. Vermillion drew first blood on a 15-yard scamper by running back Jordan Robinson. The two-point conversion was successful when QB Earl Kiertzer connected with Kylen Freidel.

The Tanagers struck again when Kylen Freidel ran for a 60-yard touchdown in the second quarter. The salty Tanager defense held Canton scoreless in the first half with only 70 yards of total offense.

The second half proved to be a defensive struggle. Major defensive contributors for the Tanagers were Nick Mart with 8 solo tackles, Garret Heine with 6 solos and Chase Allen with 4 solos. With their bend but don't break philosophy, Vermillion wore down the opposing offense and forced two turnovers and three punts.

Canton scored a late touchdown on a Peterson run of 20 yards to make things interesting with one minute left in the game. However, a failed two-point conversion and a botched onside kick received by Chase Allen sealed their fate.

"We have some great individuals on this team, but more importantly, these guys know how to play as a team," said Coach Gault. "It's been a great group to work with, and I look forward to seeing them succeed at varsity and JV levels next year."

Coach Delvaux commented, "I'm very proud of these young men, I hope all of them hit the weights hard and continue to improve their athleticism."
