These students were selected for this honor by school authorities in Vermillion and First Dakota National Bank, CorTrust, First Bank and Trust and Vermillion Federal Credit Union will pay the expenses of their trip.
Attending the two-day conference will be over 175 high school seniors, principals, teachers and bankers from all parts of the state. The purpose of the conference is to stimulate the interest of young people in building financial security and to give them a greater understandding of our modern money and banking system. In addition to hearing talks by a number of financial experts, they will join in workshop sessions and discussion on various aspects of money management.
The conference is sponsored by the South Dakota Bankers Foundation through the South Dakota Bankers Association Education Committee composed of bankers throughout the state. The committee members, augmented by bankers, will act as discussion facilitators for the various workshop sessions during the two-day seminar.
Th economics seminar includes again the Birkeland Leadership Lecture Series. The series was created in memory of David S. Birkeland, past president of the South Dakota Bankers Association and president of First Bank of South Dakota, Sioux Falls. He was killed in a plane crash with Gov. George S. Mickelson and six others in April 1993, while serving his community and state.
Thanks to the generosity of the South Dakota Bankers Association a $25,000 endowment in memory of Birkeland was given to the South Dakota Bankers Foundation. The earnings from the endowment are earmarked to help defray expenses for a lecture series to be presented at the annual Economics Seminar for Young Adults.
Roger Crawford has been selected as this year's lecturer in the Birkeland Leadership Lecture Series. As a profesional speaker, Crawford works with organizations that want to achieve success despite the obstacles, in order to inspire a winning attitude towards work and life.
Sports Illustrated calls Crawford one of the most accomplished physically challenged athletes in the world. Besides being a tennis pro, he has been inducted into three separate halls of fame because of his amazing accomplishments.
