Junior setter Ashley Gross (Norfolk, NE) led USD with 12 kills on the evening. Sophomore outsider hitter Gabi Jarchow (Lincoln, NE) had her team-best eighth double-double of the season with 11 kills and 16 digs along with posting two ace serves.
Senior setter Casey Beardsley (Sterling, CO) dished out 24 assists for the Coyotes, with freshman setter Gina Baldwin (Mitchell, SD) adding 17 more along with 10 digs. Sophomore libero Amber Kobus (Columbus, NE) led all players with 33 digs on the night, and had two aces as well.
USD fell behind two games to none to start the match, but managed to withstand a quick 5-1 start by the Mavericks in the third by unleashing an 8-0 run of its own later in the match en route to winning a hard fought game and extending the match. The roles were reversed in the fourth as South Dakota raced out to a 7-1 lead, but Minnesota State responded with a 12-4 run to regain the lead. However, MSU was unable to maintain that advantage as the Coyotes closed out the fourth with an 8-1 run down the stretch to set up a decisive fifth game.
The Mavericks gave up the first point of the fifth, but then scored the next four to take a commanding lead that they never would relinquish. USD stayed within as close as three points at 12-9, but were not able to make up any more ground as Minnesota State escaped with a 15-11 victory.
