Tanagers suffer season’s fifth loss vs. Lennox

Tanagers suffer season's fifth loss vs. Lennox
In a Big 8 Conference game played last Friday, Oct. 6 it became defense oriented for both teams, but a steady, relentless Lennox offense was instrumental in the outcome.

To begin with, the Orioles took the opening kickoff and proceeded to drive the length of the field using a 15-play, 55-yard, 4-minute time span before a fumble, recovered by Vermillion's Harrison Hawley, prevented a score. Conversely, the Tanagers went 39 yards before punting.

Lennox then used four plays to cover 53 yards for a touchdown. After the ensuing kick off, Vermillion lost the ball on a fumble and the Orioles scored on a short field. A Tanager defense couldn't stop the relentless offense by the Orioles which allowed the visitors to score 21 points in the first half.

The only highlights for the Tanager offense were a couple long runs by Jerrod Freidel. Unfortunately, Lennox tripled every offensive Tanager statistic.

The defensive stats include six solo tackles and 17 assists by Luke Heine. Jerrod Freidel had seven Ts, and Jackson Freidel intercepted a pass along with six Ts; Andrew Eidem, Heath Hubert, and Cody Miller were each credited with five Ts (Miller having a QB sack). Altogether the Tanager defensemen were busy totaling 75 tackles in the contest.

"It was another tough loss for our team as I felt our kids practiced hard and were prepared for the game this week," said coach Gary Culver. "We continue to be our own worst enemy as turnovers resulted in short fields and scores for Lennox. They capitalized on our miscues and you cannot give a good football team like this those opportunities.

"It always seemed like it was one missed tackle or block that resulted in a big play for them also," he continued. "We have been hit by injuries lately, but we have to have other players step up and do the job."

Vermillion has its overall record fall to 2-5 and its conference record fall to 0-3. The Tanagers will close out their regular season by hosting the Winner Warriors for Parent's Night. The Warriors have a 5-1 record on the season. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Oct. 13 in the DakotaDome.

"We want to finish our regular season on a high note as we host an old rival, the Winner Warriors," Culver said. "We've had many great games with Winner over the years and I would suspect that this one will be no different. We will be fighting for a playoff spot in this game so there should be extra incentive for our team this week."
