Contestants must write the short story in the designated room within the three- hour allotted time. In addition, a certain theme, image, or idea, which will not be announced until the contest begins, must figure prominently in participants' stories. Computers will be available for use, although contestants may also handwrite their stories.
Stories earning first and second place will automatically be published in the 2007 VLP magazine, and, in honor of the VLP's 10-year anniversary, the first-place winner will also pick up $200 – twice the amount from previous years. Second place will earn a $50 gift certificate from Barnes & Noble Bookstore at USD.
A panel of judges will read the stories and select the winners. Winners will be announced at the VLP's poetry reading on Thursday, Oct. 26, at 7 p.m., at the Coffee Shop Gallery, 24 W. Main Street, and on the VLP's Web site.
Michelle Rogge-Gannon, VLP faculty advisor and instructor of English at USD, said, "It's wonderful that our English department faculty get a chance to judge the stories and that the contest winners get published."
