USD volleyball falls after battle with St. Cloud State
The South Dakota volleyball squad battled tight in the first two games before dropping a 3-0 (30-28, 30-28, 30-19) North Central Conference decision at St. Cloud State. The Coyotes fell to 4-20 overall and 0-10 in the NCC while SCSU improved to 8-18 on the season and 1-7 in league play.

Junior setter Ashley Gross (Norfolk, NE) led USD with 13 kills on the match while hitting at a .321 clip. Sophomore middle blocker Heather Hult (Davis) added 11 kills and had a hitting percentage of .381.

Sophomore libero Amber Kobus (Columbus, NE) had a team-high 15 digs, while freshman outsider hitter Jamie Vander Kooi (Merrill, IA) added 11 along with three block assists. Senior setter Casey Beardsley (Sterling, CO) dished out 20 assists on the match, while freshman setter Gina Baldwin (Mitchell) had 15.

The first game was extremely competitive all the way through as neither team had a lead larger than three points until the host Huskies ripped off a 7-1 run late in the game to take a 26-20 lead. SCSU then withstood a Coyote comeback to escape with the 30-28 win in the first.

The second game was similar to the first with the largest lead enjoyed at any point by either school being St. Cloud State's 23-18 advantage. Once again, USD rallied and eventually retook the lead at 28-27. However, the Huskies rolled off three straight kills down the stretch and earned the come-from-behind victory to take a 2-0 lead. SCSU jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the third and final game and never looked back to close out the match.

The Coyotes will return to the DakotaDome for a four-match homestand to conclude the 2006 season on Friday, Oct. 27, when they host Minnesota-Crookston at 7 p.m. in a non-conference matchup.
