Wetering, Maloney lead strong performance
Tyler Wetering and Kelsey Maloney had strong performances to lead the South Dakota men's and women's cross country teams at the Coyote Invitational at the Don Baker Cross Country Course at Vermillion, on Friday, Oct. 6.

The competition included both a 3,000-meters and 5,000-meters race for the women's competitors while the men's athletes competed in 4,000-meters and 8,000-meter races.

Wetering, a senior from Sioux Falls, continued his dominant fall season by recording another win. Wetering recorded a 12-second victory in 26:01.22, well ahead of the 26:13.12 clocked by runner-up Matt Pohren of Northwest Missouri State. Overall, USD took four of the top 10 spots in the men's race, which included Northwest Missouri State, Dakota Wesleyan and South Dakota runners.

Matt Yaggie, a sophomore from Mission Hill, was second in 26:18.36. Freshman Rob Gregoire of Wakonda, was fourth in 26:52.95; while freshman Sean Fitzsimmons of Yankton, finished 10th in 27:48.92. Also for the Coyotes, Josh Blue, a junior from Council Bluffs, IA, was 13th in 28:35.87, followed closely by Josh Jeffery, a junior from Spearfish, in 28:54.93. USD's John Coleman, a senior from Littleton, CO, was 19th in 29:16.45.

The men's 4,000-meter race was won by Gable Andrews who was running unattached. The top collegiate finisher was Tim Nutley of Mount Marty College, who finished fourth in 14:36.99. Abraham Mayola of Northwest Missouri State finished sixth among the eight runners with a time of 15:19.13.

Maloney, a sophomore from Sioux Falls, was the top collegiate runner in the women's 5,000-meter race with a clocking of 19:00.04. Ramsey Kavan, running unattached, won the race in 18:23.26.

The USD women's team placed three runners in the top-10 of the 5,000-meter race. Besides Maloney, Lexie Dunlop, a sophomore from Woodbine, IA, finished ninth in 19:41.88. Amy Lindner, a senior from Sioux Falls, was 10th in 19:50.47. USD's Jessica Lundgren, a sophomore from Truman, MN, finished 13th in 20:50.21 while Tianna Hurtado, a freshman from Loveland, CO, was 15th in 21:18.63. Also for the Coyotes, senior Amy Steckelberg of Yankton, finished 20th in 22:22.85.

In the 3,000-meter race, USD was led by junior Shannon Daly of Groton, who was fourth in 13:31.24. The race was won by Megan O'Grady of Mount Marty College in 11:55.82. Also running for USD was sophomore Allison Smith of Wahpeton, ND, who was eighth in 13:48.68; junior Jenna Hoffman of Mitchell, ninth, 13:57.57; senior Stephanie Gebhart of Elkton, 10th, 13:57.92; and senior Kassy Laber of Parkston, 11th, 13:58.25. Participants from Mount Marty, South Dakota, Nebraska-Omaha, and Northwest Missouri State competed in the two women's races.

Next for the South Dakota cross country squads is the North Central Conference Championships on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 11 a.m. The championships will be hosted by USD at the Don Baker Memorial Cross Country Course.
