The Vermillion Literary Project is hosting its 10th annual short story contest. Stories earning first and second place will automatically be published in the 2007 magazine. In honor of VLP's tenth anniversary, the first-place winner will also pick up $200 – twice the amount from previous years. The second-place winner will also earn a $50 gift certificate from Barnes & Noble Bookstore at USD.
Everyone is welcome to participate, including the general public and University of South Dakota students, faculty, and staff.
The contest will be held in the McKusick Technology Center (USD campus in Vermillion, southeast corner of campus), in room 101, from 12 to 3 p.m., on Saturday, Oct. 21. Contestants should arrive no later than 11:45 a.m.
Entrants must write their story in the designated room within three hours, at the specified time and date. In addition, a certain theme, image, or idea (which will not be announced until the contest begins) must figure prominently in each story. Computers will be available, although writers can also handwrite their story.
A panel of judges consisting of USD faculty and the VLP student editor-in-chief will read the stories and select the winners. The first- and second-place winners will be announced at the Vermillion Literary Project's poetry reading on Thursday, Oct. 26, at 7 p.m., at the Coffee Shop Gallery, 24 W. Main Street. Winners will also be announced on the VLP Web site.
Writers can register the day of the contest, although a late registration fee will apply).
General public – Early registration $10; late registration $15.
USD faculty and staff – Early registration $5; late registration $10.
USD students with current ID (which must be shown at the door) – Early registration $2; Late registration $5.
Early registrations must be postmarked by Oct. 16. Late registration fees will apply for postmarks after that date.
