State Historical Society holds photo contest
The State Historic Preservation Office of the South Dakota State Historical Society at the Cultural Heritage Center is sponsoring the first Archaeology and Historic Preservation Month Photo Contest.

The competition for students, grades 1-12, proposes to enable students to achieve a better appreciation of their historic resources. With the theme of "A Sense of Place," students are asked to photograph any physical location in South Dakota which evokes senses of place and history.

Judging will be done in four categories: grades 1-5, grades 6-8, grades 9-12 and one grand-prize winner chosen from all three categories. Winners will be notified by March 1, 2007.

The grand-prize winner will have their photo incorporated into the May 2007 Archaeology & Historic Preservation Month poster.

The schools of the winners will receive a framed poster, a framed print of their winner's entry and a copy of Picturing the Past, the third book in a series published by the South Dakota State Historical Society Press. For more info visit
