After a five-year stretch of attempting to revitalize the VHS Wrestling program, head coach Casey O'Connor can enjoy the fruits of his efforts as he has a squad of 30 high school and 20 potential middle school participants.
In previous years, the Tanagers often had to forfeit some weight classes due to the lack of a wrestler available at that weight. With the nearly fifty team members, it can be expected that all weight classes will be represented at the wrestling meets.
Tanager assistant coaches are Joe Delveaux, Brad Simons, and Ryan Lems. Last year's dual record was 9-7, and the team tied for first in the conference, while finishing 18th at State. Team varsity members lost to graduation were Kyle Hubert (a four-time state placer), Tony Kronaizl, and Patrick Farrens.
Coach O'Connor evaluated his team strengths and keys to success for the upcoming season, "With a lot of varsity experience (nine previous state qualifiers) and the ability to increase our numbers from last years squad, our flexibility within various weight classes is greatly improved. Our success will depend on the great leadership from the upperclassmen. The hard work this past off-season will prove beneficial on the mat this season."
