USD literary organization hosts groups for creative writers
The Vermillion Literacy Project's (VLP) Community Writers Group is assisting in the formation and support of two groups dedicated to helping area writers improve their creative work.

The first group offers freshmen and sophomore writers at The University of South Dakota help with their creative writing, thanks to a new collaboration between the VLP and the University Writing Center.

The meetings will be hosted by Lindy Obach, VLP leader, and will be a work-shopping opportunity in which up to five student writers at a time can meet.

The group meets on Wednesdays from 3-4 p.m. in Dakota Hall, 201 to read and workshop poems, plays, short fiction or parts of longer works.

The second group is held by the VLP in collaboration with the Vermillion Area Arts Council. Everyone is welcome, including students from USD and the general public. Juniors, seniors, graduate students and local writers who are not students may be especially interested in attending these meetings. Writers are invited to share their creative writing including poems, plays, short fiction, or other types of creative works and provide feedback.

The meetings, run by VLP leaders Paula Kostel and Chuck Taylor, are held at 8 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month at the Washington Street Arts Center on 202 Washington Street

Writers should sign up for the undergraduate group by calling 677-5626. For more information about the public writer's group, e-mail or
