VHS debate team is off to good start

VHS debate team is off to good start
They haul their boxes. They've got their evidence. They are the debaters. This year the VHS debate team started off the season on a good foot. They did relatively well with individual events during the Washington High School Warrior/Roosevelt High School Rough Riders tournament.

At the Aberdeen High School Golden Cup event the team took second place in the AA sweepstakes.

In the category of Novice Extemporaneous Speaking, sophomore Jiwen Li obtained first place while sophomore Alicia Enterman received second.


In the category of Humorous Interpretation, freshman Sam Miller was awarded third place while senior Nahuel Telleria got second.

In the category of Duet Interpretation, senior Brody Stone and Telleria placed third.

The group of Dru Daniels, Stone and Miller placed first in the category of Reader's Theatre.

Coach Paul Tschetter said, "Several other students did a great job as well and just missed winning trophies."

On Nov. 17 the team went to the Mitchell McGovern Tournament and took first place AA sweepstakes with 142 points beating the Lennox team, which took second with 62 points.

During this tournament held at Mitchell High School, freshman Jiwen Li obtained first place in Novice Extemporaneous Speaking while junior Jane Reasoner got fifth place; sophomore Alicia Enterman was a finalist.

Seniors Brody Stone and Nahuel Telleria received second place in the category of duet interpretation; Telleria also received third place in the humorous category.

Li also got fourth place in Novice Lincoln-Douglas debate.

Juniors Maggie Green and Jane Reasoner received second place in Varsity Public Forum. Stone and junior Megan Amundson placed fifth in the same category.

The team has grown, incorporating assistant coach Justin Bell into the mix. Vermillion's finest debaters includes seniors Hannah Pommersheim, Nahuel Telleria, Brody Stone and Gabe Steinmeyer; juniors Amanda Barton, Micaela Telleria, Jane Reasoner, Maggie Green and Megan Amundson; sophomores Alicia Enterman and Jiwen Li; and freshmen Sam Miller and Tyler Gutzman.

Upcoming tournaments include one at USD on Dec. 1-2 and Brookings High School Brookings' Bell on Dec. 15-16.

Amundson said, "Wish us luck."
