"The Tanager freshman girls opened their season with a big win over the Harrisburg Tigers on Thursday," said Vermillion freshmen coach Nick Mayer. "We played very well defensively, causing Harrisburg to commit 24 turnovers, which is great for our first game of the year."
The Tanagers took the lead 3-2 after the first quarter, and margins of 11-0 and 9-3 in the second and third quarters boosted the lead to 23-5 going into the final period.

Vermillion sank 3 of 10 free throw tries. The Tanagers made 17 of 48 from the field, while Harrisburg was 1 of 20 from the field. The Tigers connected on 4 of 7 free throw attempts.
The Tanagers had several fine individual efforts in the victory.
"Jennifer Bye had five steals, as did Sophie Nelich-Arobba, and Hannah Nelich-Arobba had four steals," coach Mayer said. "Offensively, the Tanagers were led by Ashley Ouellette, 7 points; Sierra Allen, 6 points; and Sophie Nelich-Arobba, Hannah Nelich-Arobba, Ana Kama and Kayla Munger, who each scored four points." Jennifer Bye and Kristen Schawsinger each scored three points, and Michelle Blythe contributed two points.
