'"Great way for our kids to finish the year,'" said VHS coach Jamie Parish. "Sioux City is a very athletic team that really likes to get out in transition and makes things happen in the open court. Our kids did a pretty good job of taking those easy baskets away from them. What we really liked to see is our kids turning good defensive possessions into quick offensive possessions. Every time we got a stop we were able to push the ball hard and get some early offensive looks."
The Tanagers took the lead 13-11 after the first quarter, and margins of 20-11 and 13-12 in the second and third quarters boosted the lead to 46-34 going into the final period.
VHS made 6 of 18 three-point tries and made 11 of 14 free throw attempts. The Tanagers made 23 of 46 field goals, while SC East was 1811 of 54 from the field. SC East made 2 of 8 three-pointers and made 13 of 23 from the line.
Several significant individual efforts contributed to the win.
"Chelsea Gauer shot the ball real well which made them get out of their zone defense," coach Parish said. "From there we used our quickness and athleticism to take advantage of some mismatches. Annie Roche and Alicia Brown both put the ball in the basket again for us."
