Vermillion girls add blistering blemish to Westerners' season

At the annual Dakota Valley Classic, which was held on Jan. 20, the Vermillion girls' varsity basketball team was able to defeat the Westerners of Akron-Westfield, handing them their first loss on the season and adding a blemish that won't soon be relieved.

After the first half was over, Vermillion was able to turn a deadlocked game into a somewhat consistent and comfortable second-half lead. The final score, favoring the Tanagers of Vermillion, was 50 to 45.

The Tanager girls once again shot under 50 percent from the field, including just over a lowly mark of 33 percent from the three-point area. VHS finished with more turnovers, fewer fouls and more rebounds than their opponents.

Alicia Brown led the way for VHS with 15 points and five rebounds. Chelsea Gauer contributed nine points and three steals. Annie Roche, not necessarily her usual self in this contest, was only able to produce seven points and three assists.
