Vermillion Tanager gymnasts qualified for the South Dakota State Gymnastics Meet by placing third in the region meet held in Madison on Friday, Feb. 9, with a score of 119.65. Madison placed first (140.975), and Wagner was second (120.725), while West Central rounded out the team scoring by finishing fourth with a 110.675.
"I was pleased with how many girls we qualified for the state meet," said coach Mark Upward. "We were pumped up to beat Wagner for second, but fell about a point short with that goal"
For the Tanagers, Sorensen and Walker qualified to compete in the All-Around competition by scoring above the qualifying score of 29.00. Falling just short of qualifying were Melby and Upward. Melby will go on to compete for individual honors in the vault, and Upward will compete on individual day in the floor exercise and balance beam. Other Tanagers who qualified for individual day were Dykstra (beam) and Renner (uneven bars).
The Tanagers not only lost Hofman, but Raychel Lorenz a month ago with a torn ACL, and then lost Melby for five weeks with a broken knuckle in her hand.
