VHS varsity wins thriller double OT
The Vermillion Tanagers defeated the Dakota Valley Panthers 61-59 in a knuckle-whitening double overtime thriller in girls' basketball Feb. 6 at Vermillion. The Tanagers shot 54 percent from the field for the game. The score was tied 48-48 after regulation.

Alicia Brown scored 22 points, grabbed nine rebounds, made six assists and five steals.

The teams were deadlocked 13-13 after the opening period, the Tanagers went into the locker room up 35-28 at halftime, and then led 46-38 going into the final period. The score was tied at 54 after the first overtime.


"We took Dakota Valley's best shot and battled through to hold on for a win," said VHS coach Jamie Parish. "We had several players make plays for us this evening. Rachel Odens and Alexa Walker had some huge offensive rebounds and free throws for us down the stretch. Krista Froke and Chelsea Gauer made some tremendous defensive plays for us that took away possessions from Dakota Valley and gave us some extra opporunities."

VHS sank 7 of 25 three-point tries and sank 18 of 24 free throw attempts. The Tanagers connected on 28 of 52 field goal attempts, while Dakota Valley was 23 of 58 from the field. Dakota Valley connected on 4 of 13 three-pointers and connected on 9 of 20 free throw tries.
