He is responsible for enhancing the college's network administration and security degree program and designing and developing the college's new cyber crime investigations degree program, which will be launched this fall.
Smith has been employed for the last nine years at Western Iowa Tech as an instructor in the microcomputer specialist and computer networking programs.

He earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Truman State University (formerly Northeast Missouri State University), Kirksville, MO, and a master's degree in administrative studies from The University of South Dakota. He is certified as a Microsoft certified systems engineer (MCSE) for Windows 2000 and 2003. He has also obtained certified computer examiner certification from the International Society of Forensic Computer Examiners.
His wife, Tracy, is a licensed customs broker with Dakota International Trading in North Sioux City.
