The Vermillion Tanagers rolled over the Dakota Valley Panthers 51-26 in boys' basketball March 6 at Vermillion.

"Tonight we had a great team win," said Vermillion freshmen coach Jon Brooks. "Everyone played hard and executed well. We handled their pressure well and got some easy baskets to extend our lead, then finished strong."


The Tanagers took the lead 14-4 after the first quarter, and margins of 12-4 and 15-9 in the second and third quarters boosted the lead to 41-17 going into the final period.

Vermillion improved its record to 4-6, while Dakota Valley dropped to 1-7.

Vermillion hit 1 of 5 three-point tries and hit 4 of 4 from the line. The Tanagers sank 21 of 41 field goals, while Dakota Valley was 16 of 30 from the field. Dakota Valley sank 1 of 3 three-point tries and connected on 5 of 12 free throw attempts.

The Vermillion Tanagers pulled away in the last stanza to defeat the Dakota Valley Panthers 31-21 in boys basketball March 6 at home in a game where the Tanagers held the Panthers to only 5 field goals.

Vermillion JV had led by only one heading into the final quarter.

"This was a great victory for our kids," said Vermillion JV coach Jon Ruevers. "We played hard the entire game."

Vermillion JV carried the game from long range, making 5 of 10 three pointers to 1 of 4 for Dakota Valley.

The Tanagers jumped in front 6-4 at the end of the first period, led 12-11 at halftime, and then led 19-18 going into the final period.

Vermillion JV improved its record to 2-11, while Dakota Valley dropped to 4-9.

Vermillion JV hit 0 of 6 free throw tries. The Tanagers made 15 of 37 field goal attempts, while Dakota Valley was 5 of 27 from the field. The Panthers sank 10 of 15 from the line.

The Vermillion Tanagers overpowered the Dakota Valley Panthers 28-10 in girls' basketball March 6 at home in a game where the Tanagers held the Panthers to only 5 field goals.

"The starters set the pace and every member on the roster got to play," said Vermillion freshmen coach Nick Mayer.

The contest was well-played, with the Tanagers committing only 6 turnovers and the Panthers committing only 5.

The Tanagers took the lead 8-2 after the first quarter, and margins of 12-2 and 6-4 in the second and third quarters boosted the lead to 26-8 going into the final period.

Vermillion improved its season mark to 10-1, while Dakota Valley fell to 2-9.

Vermillion freshmen made 4 of 4 from the line. The Tanagers made 12 of 37 field goal attempts, while Dakota Valley was 5 of 21 from the field. The Panthers made 0 of 4 free throw attempts.

The Vermillion Tanagers downed the West Central Trojans 28-17 in girls' basketball March 8 at Hartford. The Tanagers shot 50 percent from the field for the game.

This was a big win over arch-rival West Central. Vermillion freshmen improved its season mark to 11-1, while West Central fell to 4-8.

"Ouellette and Allen led the defense and Allen led the offense with 15 points," said Vermillion freshmen coach Nick Mayer.

The Tanagers jumped ahead 6-2 after the first quarter, went into the locker room up 14-7 at halftime, and then held a lead of 21-14 going into the final period.

Vermillion freshmen made 4 of 6 free throw tries. The Tanagers connected on 12 of 24 field goals, while West Central was 5 of 19 from the field. The Trojans hit 7 of 14 free throw tries.

The Vermillion Tanagers lost to the Wagner Red Raiders 41-27 in boys' basketball March 12 at home as the Tanagers shot just 31 percent from the field.

"We needed to take care of the ball, and work better as a team," said Vermillion JV coach Jon Ruevers.

The teams were deadlocked 4-4 at the end of the first period, the Tanagers trailed 22-13 at halftime, and then trailed 34-20 going into the fourth quarter.

The loss dropped Vermillion JV to a record of 2-12, while Wagner improved to 6-10.

Vermillion JV made 1 of 4 three-point tries and made 1 of 8 free throw attempts. The Tanagers connected on 11 of 35 field goals, while Wagner was 20 of 40 from the field. Wagner made 0 of 1 three-point attempts and connected on 1 of 3 free throw tries.

The Vermillion Tanagers were defeated by the Wagner Red Raiders 37-23 in girls' basketball March 12 at home as the winners held the lead after each quarter.

"The junior varsity girls did not have a very good performance," said Vermillion JV coach Lori Jerred. "We played half-speed and it cost us a win. We struggled to break their full court press and had 25 turnovers."

Both sides were plagued by turnovers, with the Tanagers turning it over 26 times, and the Red Raiders committing 24 turnovers.

The Tanagers trailed 5-4 after the first quarter, trailed 19-12 after the second quarter, and then trailed 30-19 after the third period.

The loss dropped Vermillion JV to a record of 11-3, while Wagner improved to 11-3.

Vermillion JV made 1 of 2 three-pointers and sank 2 of 7 free throw attempts. The Tanagers hit 10 of 32 field goal attempts, while Wagner was 12 of 36 from the field. Wagner connected on 0 of 3 three-pointers and hit 13 of 25 free throw tries.

The Vermillion Tanagers were defeated by the Alcester-Hudson Cubs 35-22 in boys' basketball March 13 at Alcester as the winners held the lead after each quarter.

"We played very hard with effort and heart, but just came out on the short end," said Vermillion JV Coach Jon Ruevers.

The Tanagers trailed 8-4 after the opening period, trailed 15-10 after the second quarter, and then trailed 21-14 after the third quarter.

The loss dropped Vermillion JV to a record of 2-13, while Alcester-Hudson improved to 6-8.

Vermillion JV connected on 1 of 5 three-pointers and made 5 of 8 from the line. The Tanagers connected on 8 of 29 field goals, while Alcester-Hudson was 11 of 38 from the field. Alcester-Hudson made 0 of 3 three-point attempts and hit 13 of 22 free throw tries.
