Vermillion grapplers place ninth at state
Five members of the Vermillion Tanager wrestling team had a stellar performance at the 2007 Class A Individual State Wrestling Tournament, held Feb. 23-24 in Sioux Falls.

The Tanager wrestlers overcame what could easily be described as overwhelming odds. Of the the 32 teams participating in the tournament, the Vermillion wrestlers, as a team, placed ninth with 75.5 points.

They overcame competitiors from 24 other schools, some of much larger size, including Sioux Falls Roosevelt, Sioux Falls O'Gorman, Sioux Falls Washington, Aberdeen Central and Brookings.


Vermillion's Earl Kiertzner placed seventh in the 103 pound weight class. Also placing seventh was Tanner Mart, a Tanager wrestling at 140 pounds.

Nick Mart placed fourth in the 160 pound class, and top honors went to Luke Heine, who garnered a first place in the 171 pound class.

Harrison Hawley brought home fourth place honors in the 285 pound class.

"After 11 years, the Vermillion Tanagers have another state champ. Junior Luke Heine won the 171-pound weight class at the State A Wrestling Tournament," Coach O'Connor said. "Luke finished his junior season with an impressive record of 34-1 on the year. Luke went into the state tournament ranked number one in the state and finished the year as number one. He had an outstanding season and will be a tremendous asset to our team next year."

O'Connor noted the Vermillion wrestling team ended its season with five individuals placing at the state tournament.
