2007 Tanager baseball opening potpourri
The VHS Tanager varsity opened the '07 season in a scheduled game at Yankton on Friday, March 23 in the Riverside Baseball stadium. The weather was chilly with winds gusting at times. The homestanding Bucks suffered a 3-2 loss when the Tanagers scored three runs after being behind 0-2 in the last inning.

Alex Schaack started on the mound and went four innings giving up one run on four hits, recording two Ks and no walks. He was relieved by J.R. Moore who pitched two innings, walked two, recorded two Ks, two hits, and one run (he was awarded the win), as Zach earned a save by shutting down the opposition when a error became an out with the runner attempting to score and being thrown out (5-2) for the final out of the game.

Line scores; Tanagers – three runs, one hit, three errors, five LOB; Bucks – two runs, six hits, one error, six LOB. Vermillion took full advantage of five walks and a key error to gain the victory. Reid Meirkort had the only hit, and RBIs were credited to Jeff Donnelly and Bobby Dykstra.


The 19-member squad is coached by Jason Gault, assisted by Nick Mayer. The starting lineup includes seniors Zach Weiss, Ryan Gilbertson, Eric McPherson, Jeff Donnelly, Bobby Dykstra, and Paul Hammond; with juniors C.J. Haakinson and Reid Mierkort, and sophomore Kyle Nenec. The pitching corps includes Dykstra, Ryan Husby, Gilbertson, Ryan Angelo, Alex Schaack, and Meirkort. Jackson and Jerrod Freidel, Tyler Theodorff, Mikal Ustad, Jordan Merrigan, and Cory Taggart will act as replacements for a starter or pinch hitter or designated hitter when necessary.

Next, the Tanagers faced Beresford in a match played in Beresford on March 25. Vermillion rode the shoulders of pitcher, Zach Weiss, who pitched a two run, five hit complete game, registering 11 Ks while walking two. Weiss also went two for three at bats and scored a run. Reid Meirkort was two for four, one run, one RBI; Kyle Nemec went three for four, one run, one RBI; Tyler Theodorff scored a run after a base on balls, two steals, and a fielder's choice to complete the scoring.
