Get a kit. Make a plan. Be informed.

In South Dakota, springtime doesn't necessarily mean gentle rains and light breezes. South Dakota springs brew up their own version of severe weather, and the South Dakota Office of Emergency Management wants to make sure you're prepared for it.

April 23-27, is Severe Weather Preparedness Week. The Office of Emergency Management is encouraging all South Dakotans to prepare for severe weather by getting an emergency supply kit, making an emergency plan, and staying informed about impending weather.

"If you live in the Midwest, you've experienced a lot of severe weather, and you might think you don't need an emergency supply kit," said Kristi Turman, Office of Emergency Management director. "However, when the power goes out and stays out for several days, I can guarantee your family will be a lot more comfortable if you have some supplies on hand and plan for dealing with the situation."

Emergency supply kits should include:

  • Enough food and water for at least three days
  • A battery powered radio/ NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration)Weather Radio
  • First aid kit
  • Garbage bags
  • Flashlight and batteries
  • Wrench or pliers
  • A manual can opener
  • Waterproof matches
  • Hardwired phone
  • Extra house/car keys

    Emergency plans should include:

  • How your family will get/stay in contact with each other during a disaster
  • An out-of-state contact person your family can check in with
  • A meeting place
  • Several destinations the family can escape to
  • Alternative routes for getting to those destinations

    Stay informed by:

  • Following weather reports
  • Following the weather warning and watch recommendations provided by the National Weather Service
  • Talking to your county emergency manager about disasters that could strike your community
