Be prepared for potential floods
The South Dakota Office of Emergency Management is preparing for possible flooding in the eastern and southeastern portion of the state.

Agricultural fields and roads in Brookings, Bon Homme, Clay, Davison, Hutchinson, Lincoln, Minnehaha, Moody, Sanborn, Turner, and Union counties could experience some flooding this week.

Anticipated rainfall is expected to push the Big Sioux, lower James, and Vermillion rivers past flood stage.

The South Dakota Office of Emergency Management is in contact with emergency managers in the impacted counties. The office has also made contact with other local, state, and federal partners to identify available resources.

The Office of Emergency Management reminds the public of the following flood safety tips:

  • Avoid floodwaters; water may be contaminated.
  • Don't walk through moving water. Six inches of moving water can make you fall.
  • Do not drive into flooded areas. You and the car could be swept away.
