Catholic Daughters hold state convention
The 44th Biennial State Convention of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas convened at the Holiday Inn, Mitchell, April 13-15.

The theme of the convention was "Angels and Catholic Daughters Are God's Messengers to the World."

A past-regents luncheon was held April 13 at 11:30 a.m. Past regents Barbara Kronaizl and Mary Geffre Johnson, Vermillion, represented the St. Agnes Court #687.

A memorial Mass was held at 4 p.m. at the Holy Spirit Church, with Celebrant Father Andrew Swietochowski celebrating the Mass. Maria Heimstra lighted the candles for five deceased members of St. Agnes Court of the last two years, namely Blanche Gregoire, Dorothy Yeado, Sara Walz Brown, Patricia Sloan and Ferne Wirth.

Friday evening, Bishop Blase J. Cupich, Rapid City Diocese, was the featured speaker.

State Regent Ceqilia Gibbons, Sioux Falls, presented the bishop with a "Bishop's Burse" to use for seminarians. This was a gift from the Catholic Daughters throughout the state.

Saturday's activities consisted of a morning Mass by Biship Cupich, greetings from court regent Jessica Beems and convention chairman Joyce Hughes.

Committee reports were given. Thirty-five courts were in attendance, with nearly 175 members present.

Awards won by the court St. Agnes were youth; education, Maria Heimstra, first place ��art; poetry, Emily Holoch, second place; essay, second place, Cassie Donahue; third place, Bennet Johnson.

St. Agnes newsletter received second place; scrapbook – honorable mention.

The state project, "Life Savers," took in over $7,000 profit, which will be donated to eight abuse shelters in the state.

On Sunday, Bishop Paul Swain, Sioux Falls Diocese, installed the newly elected officers. They are: State Regent Cecilia Gibbons; First Vice Regent JoAnn Shaefers; Second Vice Regent Doris Berens; Secretary, Vickie Feist; and Treasurer, Barbara Weichman.

Theresa Kocer, Sioux Falls, national director, represented the National Catholic Daughters of the Americas.

St. Agnes Court 687 delegates were Linda Paulson, regent; Kay Bjorkman, vice regent; Maria Heimstra, treasurer; and Mary Geffre Johnson, past state regent.

The 2009 convention will be held in Rapid City, Ramkota Inn, with St. Rita Court, hostess, April 17-19, 2009.
