Renters beware

To the editor:

Whenever you choose to rent or must move to a new apartment, here are a few simple things to save you grief.

Make sure you know who you are renting from! Check backgrounds thoroughly, and talk to former or current tenants to find how expediently problems in the apartment are handled.

Don't rely on your lease to save you and if you want to rent and you must have a landlord, be very very careful whom you choose!

Prepare for severe weather

To the editor:

Severe weather is a way of life in South Dakota. Let's make sure we're prepared to live with it.

April 23-27, 2007, is Severe Weather Preparedness Week. It's a great time for you and your family to put together an emergency supply kit, to make a family emergency plan, and to be informed about the disasters that could strike your community.

Keeping some extra food and water around the house and paying attention to weather reports are some simple steps you can take to keep your family safe and comfortable when severe weather strikes.

For more information about preparing your family for severe weather, visit www.oem.sd.gov.

Have a safe and fun summer!
