South Dakota women's softball team splits doubleheader
Tagney Jones had a season-high 11 strikeouts to help lift the South Dakota women's softball team (11-21) to a 5-3 nonconference win in game one and a split of a doubleheader with North Dakota (9-7) on Sunday, April 1 at the DakotaDome. UND won the second game by a 10-1 score.

With the win in game one, Jones improved to 4-13 on the season. Jones, a sophomore from Lincoln, NE, had her ninth complete game of the season. She allowed seven hits, three runs (all earned) and had 11 strikeouts with three walks. USD had five runs on six hits with one error while UND had three runs on seven hits with three errors.

North Dakota jumped out to a 3-0 lead by plating two runs in the first inning and adding a tally in the third inning. USD answered in the third inning with Ashley Weyers (sophomore, Lincoln, NE) scoring on Abby Poulter's (junior, Colfax, IA) RBI infield single.

Weyers also played a huge role in the Coyotes' decisive fourth-inning rally when USD scored four runs. USD's Jasey Goedeken (freshman, Columbus, NE) opened the fourth inning with a single and Stephanie Bergman (senior, Ithaca, NE) reached on a fielder's choice with Emily Chvatal (sophomore, Malmo, NE) reaching on an error to load the bases with no outs. Then, Weyers hit what proved to be a game-winning three-run triple, which scored all three base runners and provided the Coyotes with a 5-3 advantage. For the game, Weyers had two hits in three trips to the plate with three RBI and two runs scored.

From there, Jones locked in and kept UND off the board for the remainder of the game. With two UND runners on base in the seventh inning, Jones struck out UND's Nicole Puerling and Justine Wernick to give USD the win and snap a two-game losing streak.

UND Alicia Pearce took the loss and dropped to 5-2 on the season. She allowed six hits, five runs (two earned) with seven strikeouts and one walk in six innings of work.

In game two, North Dakota jumped on USD starter Tiffany Mockenhaupt (freshman, Lincoln, NE) for five first-inning runs en route to a 10-1 decision. The big blast for UND was Justine Wernick's grand slam. UND scored in all five innings of the game which ended by the eight-run rule in the fifth inning. North Dakota scored a run in the second, added a pair in the third and had single tallies in both the fourth and fifth innings. UND's Jess Price also homered.

South Dakota tallied its lone run in the fifth inning with Rachel Fricke (freshman, Monroe, NE) scoring on an error by UND's Price.

South Dakota finished with three hits, including singles by Bergman and Dani Bahlman (freshman, Marshall, MN) as well as a double by Krystal Kirwan (junior, Omaha, NE).

North Dakota collected 10 runs on 12 hits. For UND, Marie Kriegler went the distance and improved to 4-5 on the season. She had four strikeouts and a walk.

Mockenhaupt, who drop-ped to 3-3 on the season, failed to retire a UND batter and allowed five runs on four hits.
