South Dakota women’s tennis team ends regular season with a 7-2 loss

The South Dakota Women's Tennis Team dropped a 7-2 decision to North Dakota in North Central Conference action on Sunday morning at the USD Tennis Courts on the USD campus. The Coyotes fell to 1-5 in the NCC and now sit 16-9 overall. North Dakota improved to 16-1 and 4-1 in NCC action.

USD ended its regular season with an all-time mark of 16 wins in dual competition.

The Coyotes picked up wins at #1 doubles with Amanda Nicol and Maggie Peters and at #5 singles with Rachel Kludt.

At #1 doubles, Nicol, a junior from East London, South Africa, and Peters, a freshman from Des Moines, IA, defeated UND's top doubles team of Emily and Katie Callison by a score of 8-4. Nicol/Peters improved their overall doubles record to 12-5.

Kludt, a senior from Huron, defeated Mollie Mauer of UND in straight sets with a 6-3, 6-4 victory. Kludt, who improved her singles record to 13-7, trailed in the second set 4-3 but rallied to win the final three games of the set.

The difference in the match was UND's ability to win tie breakers. At #1 singles, UND's Emily Callison defeated Nicol, 6-0, 3-6, and 10-6 in the tiebreaker. Nicol dropped to 14-6 on the season. At #3 singles, USD's Amanda Barton dropped to 11-9 on the season when she lost to Lindsey Folkert by a 6-2, 2-6 and 4-10 score. Barton and Kludt also lost a closely contested #2 doubles match by a 9-7 score to Folkert and Emma Hustad of UND.

#4 – Christa Hall, UND, def. Allie Hoffmann (12-8, freshman, Sioux Falls), USD, 6-2, 6-1.

#5 – Rachel Kludt (13-7, senior, Huron), USD, over Mollie Mauer, UND, 6-3, 6-4.

#6 – Katie Wessman, UND, over Michelle Hogan (13-5, senior, Rapid City), USD, 6-4, 7-6 (7-1).

Doubles

#1 – Nicol/Peters (12-5), USD, def. Callison/Callison, UND, 8-4.

#2 – Barton/Kludt, USD, over Folkert/Emma Hustad, UND, (9-7), USD, 9-7.

#3 – Mauer/Katie Hoverstein, UND, over Hoffman/Megan Arend (8-5, Sioux Falls), 8-2.

The Coyotes will next be in action at the North Central Conference Tennis Championships at the Hanscom Tennis Center in Omaha, NE, on Friday and Saturday.
