USD softball team falls to UND in doubleheader
The University of South Dakota softball team lost a pair of one-run games in a North Central Conference doubleheader by North Dakota by scores of 3-2 and 4-3. The Coyotes fell to 15-34 overall and 3-7 in NCC play while UND improved to 15-18 and 3-7 in league competition with the sweep.

In the opener, North Dakota took a 3-0 lead into the sixth inning when USD got on the board thanks to a two-out RBI single by senior leftfielder Stephanie Bergman (Ithaca, NE) that drove in junior catcher Abby Poulter (Colfax, IA). Bergman came around to score on the next at-bat when freshman designated player Rachel Fricke (Monroe, NE) belted a double to left. However, that proved to be the final scoring in the game as UND took the first contest.

Sophomore Tagney Jones (Lincoln, NE) started at pitcher and went the distance, allowing seven hits, three runs (all earned) and one walk while striking out four in six innings of work, falling to 6-21 with the decision. Bergman had her third consecutive multi-hit game by going 2-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored.

South Dakota jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the second game by scoring all three runs in the top of the first frame. Junior third baseman Krystal Kirwan (Omaha, NE) led off the game with a home run to left, her team-leading seventh round-tripper of the season. Kirwan's homer was the 10th of her career, moving her into a tie for fourth-place on the USD all-time list.

Following Kirwan's home run, freshman centerfielder Michelle Jones (Rapid City) had a two-RBI single with two away, driving in both Poulter and Fricke on the play. North Dakota closed to within a run in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of runs to make the score 3-2. UND completed the victorious rally in the bottom of the seventh, clinching the win on a walk-off sacrifice fly.

Freshman pitcher Jasey Goedeken (Columbus, NE) threw her first career complete game against UND, scattering 11 hits, four runs (three earned), two walks and one strikeout in 6-2/3 innings, falling to 0-2 with the loss. Michelle Jones was 2-for-3 with a double and a pair of RBIs, while sophomore rightfielder Ashley Weyers (Lincoln, NE) also went 2-for-3.
