USD to host camps for gifted students this summer
The University of South Dakota will host a pair of camps in July for South Dakota's gifted middle school and high school students.

The 24th annual South Dakota Governor's Camp is open to students entering seventh, eighth and ninth grades in the fall of 2007. This camp will run during the week of July 22 through July 27 and it allows participants to compete in a variety of team-building tasks related to this year's "Imagine It!" theme as well as to showcase their individual and group demonstration projects.

One week prior to the Governor's Camp, South Dakota high school students entering 10th, 11th or 12th grade are eligible to attend the 19th annual Ambassadors of Excellence program on the USD campus. From July 16 through July 27, Ambassadors will have an opportunity to hone their creative and performing arts skills while also learning valuable strategies for success in academics and leadership. Ambassadors will also work as mentors to middle school students at the Governor's Camp.

With more than 40 different class offerings as well as evening recreational activities, this year's Governor's Camp aims to be among the best ever, according to Tim Duggan, Ed.D, director of the South Dakota Governor's Camp.

"We had a great camp last year with more kids than in the past few years," Duggan added, "and we have several of our best team leaders returning this summer."

Tuition fees are required to attend the Governor's Camp or the Ambassadors of Excellence program. Both camps are supported by the South Dakota Department of Education and Gov. Mike Rounds, and several communities and schools offer assistance to students to help defray the cost of attending camp. Interested applicants should discuss tuition support with school counselors, administrators or gifted coordinators. All new applicants for the Governor's Camp must also provide a letter of recommendation from a school official.
