"Jeanette rose extra early that Friday. She couldn't sleep wondering if she had forgotten anything. She went over her check list and found that everything was in order for a welcome trip to the warm, sunny Mexico.
The last place Jeanette expected to be later that day was in the emergency room at Sanford Hospital Vermillion but in fact that's exactly where she ended up. The nagging twinge she had written off to hunger and pre-travel jitters earlier in the day persisted to intense pain and proved to be an inflamed appendix.

Rather than loading up the vehicle for the Saturday trip to the airport that Friday afternoon, she found herself in emergency surgery!"
Sanford Vermillion recognizes the importance of having your family and friends close by when you or a loved one needs surgery. Area citizens can find comfort and convenience in the general and specialized surgery services available here at home.
A wide range of surgeries can be performed at Sanford Hospital Vermillion including 24-hour emergency surgery.
Surgeon Brings 20 Years of Experience to Vermillion
Fernando Escobar, MD, joined the Sanford Vermillion medical staff in January 2006 as a general surgeon. Dr. Escobar is board certified with the American Board of Surgery and brings an extensive background in a wide range of surgery services to the community.
Dr. Escobar came to Vermillion with over 20 years of surgery experience including service in the United States military and a private practice in Armour. Escobar and his wife, Carol, have truly enjoyed getting to know the Vermillion area. They are particularly interested in physical fitness and music. Carol is a regular at the National Music Museum.
Surgery Team Provides Personal, Convenient Care
Dr. Escobar and the surgery department at Sanford Hospital Vermillion strive to provide patients with a convenient and personal healthcare experience. They make every effort to meet patient's needs at every stage of the surgery experience. Beginning with an easy and convenient check-in experience through a comfortable recovery period, patients are cared for by our staff of knowledgeable, compassionate healthcare providers.
With a combined 165 years of experience, the surgery department includes two certified nurse anesthetists and a team of six surgical registered nurses. Dr. Escobar, as well as many area surgeons, performs same-day procedures for patients of all ages at Sanford Hospital Vermillion. The surgical staff takes pride in the concept "Our Family Caring for Yours."
During a surgical stay we will involve patients' loved ones before and after surgery, no matter what age. If a child is having surgery, parents and family may be with him or her until they are under anesthesia; and will be called back as soon as the child is waking up.
At Sanford Hospital Vermillion, we make every effort to make sure our patients wait to be seen is short. After your surgery, you may stay as long as needed. And, we will check on you the next day just to be sure everything is going as expected.
Dr. Escobar recalls his instructions to Jeanette as she was discharged from the hospital that day. He told her what to expect for recovery and counseled her on how to best avoid infection; she was cleared for travel. However, he informed Jeanette that should she have any medical issues arise while in Mexico, he speaks fluent Spanish and she should not hesitate to call him.
"It is Sunday morning, nine days post-surgery and Jeanette and her husband along with five other couples are boarding the plane in Cancun, Mexico to return to South Dakota after eight wonderful, sun-drenched days on the beach.
Jeanette drops a beautiful island postcard in the mailbox at the airport addressed to Dr. Fernando Escobar:
"Great time recuperating in sunny Mexico thanks Doc!''
