Historical society plans annual ice cream social

The Clay County Historical Society will hold its 40th annual ice cream social on June 21, serving between 5 and 7 p.m. at 15 Austin St., Vermillion.

This year's entertainment will be music by the McNeills.

The traditional home made pie, taverns, ice cream, chips and beverages will be served. A good will donation will be accepted.

The ice cream social has been an annual function of the Clay County Historical Society for 40 years since the opening of the Austin Whittemore Historical House.

The tradition began from the birthday party that was held for Helen (Pansy) Austin Whittemore, who lived there as a little girl, inviting several of the girls to have lemonade and sugar cookies in honor of her birthday.

In case of rain, the ice cream social will moved to the Eagles at 114 West Main St., Vermillion.
