On May 22, residents of Union County soundly rejected a zoning ordinance which would have allowed for a major expansion of high-intensity industrial livestock operations at the expense of local residents. The ordinance, which was passed by the Union County Commission in the face of substantial opposition, was defeated by a nearly two-to-one margin.
Resident backers of the referendum will insist that the county's zoning board be reconstituted to reflect he results of the election so that future attempts at comprehensive zoning plans will reflect the true desires of the residents of the county.
