USD's Colte Haines named to ESPN academic first team
Colte Haines of the South Dakota men's track and field team has been named to the 2007 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VII Men's Track and Field/Cross Country Squad, according to an announcement released on Thursday, June 7 by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America). The team was determined by a vote of the District VII sports information directors.

With his selection to the squad, Haines now advances to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American national ballot.

Haines, a junior from White Lake, has a 3.912 GPA in mathematics and computer science. Haines, who was redshirted during the outdoor season this spring, won the triple jump (45'10.75) and finished third in the long jump (22'04.50) at the 2007 NCC Indoor Championships as he helped USD to a team title.

Haines was named to the 2007 NCC Academic Track and Field/Cross Country squad and the NCC Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll for Indoor Track and Field.

A member of the SAAC at USD, he received a Coyote Character Award from USD's SAAC in 2007. He will do an internship at NASA in California in the summer of 2007.

Colte Haines of the South Dakota men's track and field squad gained a greater understanding about the importance of volunteerism at the 2007 NCAA National Leadership Conference which was held in late May at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort in Lake Buena Vista, FL.

"The leadership conference was really a life-changing experience," said Haines, a junior from White Lake, who has a 3.912 GPA in mathematics and computer science at USD. "I feel more confident and energized about volunteering and helping out my campus and community. It is crucial for college athletes to give back to the community," he said.

At the conference, Haines attended sessions about volunteerism and leadership.

"One of the things I learned was that a good leader can help bring the best out in their teammates by adapting to the different styles that each individual may have," said Haines, who will participate in a 10-week internship at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory as part of the NASA Undergraduate Student Research Program this summer.

Haines also noted that the leadership conference helped him better appreciate his fellow student-athletes from around the country. "It was great to be able to interact with student-athletes from all divisions in a wide range of sports. For example, the student-athletes in air rifle, rowing, lacrosse, as well as football and basketball programs all seem to have the same challenges with regard to sportsmanship and facility upgrades," said Haines. "Although we come from different parts of the country, we all have the same core values," he said.

According to Haines, he will encourage the SAAC at USD to become even more involved in community service and volunteerism. "I think we need to have a greater emphasis with student-athletes at USD about the value of giving back to the community," said Haines.
