Legion Post #1 records 2-3 win/loss total
During the week of July 6-13, Vermillion Legion Post #1 recorded a 2-3 win/loss total. Two of the losses were heartbreaking 2-1 and 4-3 setbacks against Chamberlain Post #3, played on July 6.

Line totals: Post #1 – 1 R, 4 H, 1 E, 5 LOB; Chamberlain – 2 R, 6 H, 1 E, 9 LOB.

JR Moore pitched the five inning opener, giving up 6 hits and 4 walks, recording 2 Ks. Offensively: Zach Weiss was 1 for 3, 1 run; Reid Meierkort – 2 for 3; Jerrod Freidel – 1 for 2.


The second game was a sad 4-3 loss as Chamberlain scored 2 unearned runs.

Line scoring: Chamberlain – 3 R, 5 H, 2 E, 4 LOB; Vermillion – 3 R, 6 H, 3 E, 6 LOB.

Weiss was the losing pitcher despite holding the opposition to 6 hits and 2 earned runs. Offensively: Cory Taggart scored a run; Weiss – 2 for 3, 1 run, 1 RBI; Kyle Olsen – 1 for 2. 1 RBI; Jeff Donnelly – 1 for 3; Eric McPherson – 1 for 3; Ryan Husby – 1 run; Freidel – 1 for 2.

The third game, was another squeaker, but Vermillion prevailed 4-1 over Platte/Geddes in a single seven-inning contest played on July 7 in Platte.

Line score: Vermillion – 4 R, 4 H, 1 E, 6 LOB; Platte – 1 R, 4 H, 3 E, 3 LOB.

The game was tied 1-1 through the first six innings, when an error by Platte sparked a 3 run rally in the seventh, and starting pitcher Brandun Womack shut down the home team to claim a deserved victory. He gave up 4 hits, no walks, and recorded 4 Ks

Post #1 offense: Taggart – 1 run; Weiss – 1 for 3, 1 run; Meierkort – 1 for 4, 1 run, 1 RBI; Olsen – 1 for 4, 2 RBIs; Jeff Donnelly – 1 for 4.

Game #4: With 5 runs in the bottom half of the first, it was a foregone conclusion for Yankton, in a July 9 contest played at Riverside Park, to waltz through a six inning 10-0 win over Post #1.

Line score: Yankton – 10 R, 10 U, 1 E, 7 LOB; Vermillion – 0 R, 2 H, 0 E, 4 LOB.

JR Moore started and went four innings giving up 7 runs on 9 hits, walked 2, and struck out two. Jeff Donnelly went two innings, giving up 3 runs on 2 hits with 2 Ks.

Offensively: Meierkort was 1 for 2; Weiss – 1 for 2; Moore – 1 for 2.

Finally, after a long road trip, Post #1 returned to the friendly confines of Prentis Park in Vermillion for a meeting with Alcester on Friday, July 13, where they were victorious in a big way.

Line score: Vermillion – 15 R, 17 H, 1 E, 13 LOB; Alcester – 3 R, 7 H, 3 E, 6 LOB.

Zach Weiss started and went four innings registering 8 Ks, 3 walks, and 3 hits, giving up 3 hits and 2 runs. Ryan Gilbertson took over for a three-inning stint (a warm up for the soon coming region tourney) giving up 4 hits, 1 run, recording 3 Ks.

All 12 roster players got into the game, offensively: Cory Taggart – 2 for 3, 2 runs, 1 RBI; Weiss – 2 for 4, 3 runs, 1 RBI; Meierkort – 3 for 4, 3 runs, 3 RBIs; Olsen – 1 for 3, 2 runs, 1 RBI; Donnelly – 4 for 5, 1 run, 2 RBIs; McPherson – 2 for 4, 1 RBI; Momack – 1 for 2, 1 RBI; Husby – 1 for 2; Moore – 1 for 2, 1 run; Gilertson – 3 walks, 2 runs.

The season record stands at a level 12 wins, 12 losses with two more games before regionals.
