Stingers place fourth at Ringneck Tourney
Vermillon�s Stingers, under new head coach Dave Chickering, were entered in the Sioux Falls Ringneck softball tournament, June 29-30, and July 1. They compiled a 3-2-1 record to place fourth in the 12 team U16 group.

The first game was against the Sioux Falls Chaos, a 5-1 win.

Line totals: Stingers – 5 R, 10 H, 0 E, 5 LOB; Chaos – 1 R, 2 H, 3 E, 2 LOB.


Jenny Bye recorded 18 Ks, while giving up 2 hits and no walks. Brittany Bye was 1 for 4 with an RBI; Chelsea Houska – 3 for 3, 2 runs, 1 RBI; Donica Crichton went 1 for 2, 1 run; Jenny Bye – 2 for 3, 1 run, 2 RBIs; Anna Erickson – 2 for 3; and Ashley Ouellette – 1 for 4.

In the second game the Stingers faced the Yankton Fury in a momentous struggle which ended in a tie when the time allotted for the game expired, a unique rule for this tourney.

Line score: Stingers – 1 R, 2 H, 0 E, 1 LOB; Fury – 1 R, 3 H, 0 E, 2 LOB.

Jenny Bye pitched the full seven innings, but the team couldn�t claim a victory.

Offensive stats in the game: Crichton – 1 for 3; Britt Bye 1 for 3, 1 run Erickson – 1 RBI on a ground out.

The third game, against Bellevue Shockers, Chelsea Houska pitched the six inning game, giving up 7 runs on 6 hits as the team committed 5 errors, which contributed to the loss.

Line score: Stingers – 2 R, 9 H, 5 E, 6 LOB; Shockers – 7 R, 6 H, 2 E, 8 LOB.

Offensively, Jenny Bye was 1 for 3; Britt Bye – 1 run; Anna Erickson – 2 for 3, 1 run, 1 RBI; Megan Chickering – 2 for 2; Molly LeCates – 1 for 3; Erica Johnson – 2 for 2.

Game four pitted the Stingers vs. South Interlake, MN, Silver Blue, another shut out win for Jenny Bye who gave up two hits while recording 6 Ks.

Line score: Stingers – 3 R, 7 H, 2 E, 7 LOB; South Interlake – 0 R, 2 H, 3 E, 5 LOB.

Offensive stats: Crichton – 1 for 4; Houska – 2 for 4, 1 run, 1 RBI, Jenny Bye – 1 for 4, 1 run; Ouellette – 1 for 3, 1 RBI; Erickson – 2 for 3; Johnson – 1 run.

Game five, first consolation round, paired the Stingers with Eden Prairie, MN and was a seven inning 7-4 squeaker win by Jenny who surrendered 8 hits and struck out 8 batters.

Totals: Stingers – 7 R, 8 H, 0 E, 8 LOB; Eden Prairie – 4 R, 8 H, 4 E, 2 LOB.

Significant offensive statistics: Crichton – 1 for 3; Chelsea Houska – 1 for 4; Jenny Bye – 1 for 3, 1 run, 1 RBI; Ouellette – 1 for 3, 2 runs, 1 RBI; Britt Bye – 2 for 4, 2 runs; Chickering – 1 for 2, 1 run, 1 RBI; LeCates – 1 run.

Game six was a 4-0 loss in the consolation round and ended the tourney for the Stingers. The team from Canada was too much as Jenny Bye gave up 4 runs on 3 hits, recording 4 Ks. Vermillion – 0 R, 1 H, 2 E, 3 LOB; Canada – 4 R, 3 H, 1 E, 4 LOB.
