Vermillion Teeners go 3-0 in tourney
The Vermillion VFW 15-16 Teeners went 3-0 in the tournament held at Prentis Park in Vermillion on June 22, 23 and 24.

The tournament started with pool play on Friday and Saturday, and based on the results available below, Vermillion and Beresford advanced to the championship game.

Elk Point-Jefferson and Vermillion met in the opening game of the tourney on Friday evening. EPJ was in control for the first four innings of the game and held a 6-1 lead. EPJ added a run in the top of the fifth but Vermillion finally showed some life at the plate, scoring 2 runs to make it 7-3. Then in the bottom of the sixth Vermillion plated 6 runs to take a 9-8 lead. EPJ had scored 1 run in their half of the sixth but went down in order in the seventh for a final of 9-8.


Hartington and Vermillion met at 9 a.m. on Saturday and Vermillion came out swinging, scoring 11 runs on 9 hits, 1 walk, a hit batter and 2 errors. Hartington, even after the rough start, would keep chipping away and crept within 11-5 after three. Both teams scored in runs in the fifth and sixth innings for the final of Vermillion 14 and Hartington 8.

In the championship game, Vermillion faced a very good Beresford team which has represented its region the past two seasons at the state tournament. Vermillion broke loose first when they scored 2 runs in the third on a base-clearing double. Beresford, the home team, tied it up with a couple of runs in the fifth but Vermillion answered right back with 2 more in the sixth.

Beresford was able to send the game to extra innings as they scored 2 in the bottom of the seventh. It wasn't until the top of the ninth with 2 outs that Vermillion was able to get 4 runs across then held Beresford scoreless.

The teeners also swept Brookings and Irene, while Wagner and Sioux Falls Central was postponed because of rain. The teeners record improves to 13-2 on the season. Vermillion travels to take on the Mitchell Gold (15-16) on Friday while playing at EPJ on July 2. The next home game will be July 12 against Parkston.
