A wide range of quasquicentennial events are planned for the celebration, which will be held Aug. 9-12. A demolition derby is planned for Friday, Aug. 10, beginning at 6 p.m. in the Akron Industrial Park on the south edge of Akron, adjacent to Iowa Highway 12.
The grand parade will be held in the downtown area on Saturday, Aug. 11, beginning at 2 p.m.

Hypnotist Dave Raenes will perform in the Akron-Westfield Community School auditorium on Aug. 11, beginning at 7 p.m. A street dance with the band, Top Down, will follow at 9 p.m. in the downtown area.
A Show-n-Shine for cars and motorcycles will begin at noon on Sunday, Aug. 12, in the Akron City Park. There also will be an antique tractor and machinery display.
The celebration will conclude with a tractor pull in the Industrial Park on Aug. 12 at 4 p.m.

Formerly known as Portlandville, the town's founders changed the name to Akron when it was incorporated in 1882.
