The Norway Rib Eaters, which has a rich history of hosting large public barbecue feeds decades ago in the community, is hosting Ribs, Rods and Rock 'n Roll in Vermillion over the Labor Day weekend.
Ribs, Rods and Rock 'n Roll
is associated with Spirit of Vermillion Days and held in coordination with Winefest, but is not directly affiliated with the Vermillion Jaycees or the Buffalo Run Winery.
Earlier this summer, the Vermillion Jaycees announced they would not be sponsoring the car show or barbecue cook-off for this year's Spirit of Vermillion Days. In response to this news, a group of barbecue enthusiasts got together in hopes of organizing the event.
This group has chosen to honor Vermillion's early barbecue pioneers by adopting the name of the group that started in all in 1940 – the Norway Rib Eaters.
This year's event will celebrate this traditional style of cooking by allowing the public to become directly involved. Thanks to sponsors Hy-Vee and Jones' Foods, 500 pounds of baby back ribs will be cooked by five separate barbecue contestants.
To involve the public, Vermillion rib connoisseurs will be allowed to participate in judging this competition by purchasing sample kits and judging cards. After sampling ribs and beans, each taster will vote for their favorite rib barbecue contestant.
